11.2 ft Built-In Grill Island with Sink, Fridge & Seating
An 11 ft 3 in freestanding island with a 37 in deep countertop - 10 in deeper than a standard run - so guests sit along the back while the cook works the front. It holds a 32 in Napoleon 700 Series grill, a 24 in sink, a 24 in glass-door RCS outdoor refrigerator and two storage cabinets. Shown in Grigia with a teak back panel.

Layout
How this kitchen works
Cook's side, left to right: a 20 in storage-and-trash cabinet, the grill in a 35 in cabinet with doors, the sink cabinet, the refrigerator, and a 28 in three-drawer cabinet.
The countertop overhangs the back by about 10 in along the whole run, which turns the back of the island into a bar. Seat guests opposite the sink, refrigerator and drawer cabinet - about 6.5 ft of counter, room for three stools at 24 to 26 in each - and keep the stretch behind the grill clear of heat and smoke.
The refrigerator is at the seating end, away from the grill, so whoever fetches drinks never squeezes past the cook at the grill. The sink sits right beside the grill: rinse, prep on the counter around the sink, turn to the grill.

Footprint: 11 ft 3 in long x 37 in deep (27 in of cabinets plus the bar overhang), with the countertop at 35.7 in.
Leave 42 to 48 in of clear floor on the cook's side, and behind the stools 36 in if no one walks there or 44 in if it is a path. With a 36 in walkway at each end, plan an area of about 17 x 10.5 ft.
A freestanding island needs gas, water, a drain and an outdoor-rated circuit for the refrigerator brought out to it, usually under the patio - plan those runs before the patio is laid.

Best for
- Patios where the kitchen stands in the open and should face the guests, not a wall.
- Hosts who cook while they talk: the cook faces the bar across the counter.
- A complete kitchen - water, cold drinks and grill - for evenings when nobody wants to go inside.
Keep in mind
- The 10 in overhang suits drinks and a quick bite; for long dinners the NKBA recommends about 15 in of knee space at counter height, so add a table nearby.
- Every utility has to be trenched out to the island instead of taken through the house wall.
- About 20 in of counter on the open side of the grill; the other side is the sink.
